York House
The Office Group commissioned a refurbishment of an office building on Pentonville Road, York House. Looking to develop a new flagship co-working space in the Kings Cross area, HopkinsDesign was brought in as consultants to Matt Architecture on concept development and interior design. Our work focused on the design of the main lobby space, common areas and office floor layouts. The scheme focused on adjusting the internal lack of light to create more inviting, open and bright spaces. This was achieved by two main moves.
Firstly, by carving back the main floor in the lobby to open up the rear of the building to the south side low basement. This created a void within the central area, providing not only light to upper floors but also a space to meet up and gather. The atrium embodies two functions, bleachers and presentation space along with connecting two floors that were previously not.
Secondly, redefining the entrance to the building to express the building’s relationship to the street. The new defined entrance would provide a clear view of entry to the building but also a transparency from the street to the rear of the building, guiding users from street to desk with no excessive use of wayfinding signage.
Our internal palette was restrained, an elegant and bright set of materials and textures were chosen to showcase and enhance the existing structure. The approach to the internal layout focused mainly on developing a range of open and collaborative spaces, ”neighbourhoods” for group collaboration, alongside calmer smaller “alcove” spaces for more private and individual work.
