Antepavilion 2019

We really wanted to create a place marker, a beacon, showcasing the presence of the Columbia Wharf along the canal. It felt important and right to create something that would contrast with the building, but also reflect its long standing heritage..

A proposal visible from the canal and the street will help define this site that moment at the canal’s edge, inviting intrigue and interest as to what might lie below it, as a lighthouse defines what lies beneath. It will reflect the importance one should pay to what is on the horizon of their travels, in this case, an eclectic collection of talents, a destination for many creative industries all coming together under one roof. This lighthouse is a sculptural object that connects with its site in an abstract way. Its form is blended between a tall tower of light and a humble shelter providing a viewing point. Its silhouette simultaneously reflects the pitched roofs of the eclectic dwellings surrounding it, whilst also acting as landmark.

Decommissioned scaffolding will be its structure. Being a transient installation, what is more temporary and faster to erect than scaffolding? Second hand scaffolding boards are to be its cladding. The higher parts of the structure will be clad in old clear scaffold screen, providing a translucent section to allow light to glow out at night. All these materials can be found second hand, or  are simply thrown out after construction. We are proposing that these worn materials still have life in them and that even the most rudimentary raw materials still look beautiful.

The final piece will help galvanise understanding of the importance of longevity and legacy in materials.
